Local Warming Centers Available During Extreme Cold

With prolonged frigid temperatures forecasted, Indiana Borough and our community partners want residents to be aware of local warming centers and safe indoor spaces available during extreme cold conditions. These locations provide temporary relief from dangerous temperatures and are especially important for individuals without reliable heat or housing.


Confirmed Warming Center Availability


Indiana Free Library

  • Saturday, January 24: Open 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Sunday: Closed (regular schedule)

  • Monday: Closed

  • Tuesday: Reopening with regular hours (10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.)


Chevy Chase Community Center

  • Monday: Open 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., regardless of weather conditions

  • A hot meal will be served according to the regular meal schedule


Trinity United Methodist Church (395 School Street, Indiana, PA 15701)

  • Thursday, January 29 through Saturday, January 31, from 9:00 AM to noon.


Additional Community Warming Centers


The following locations have been identified as warming centers within Indiana Borough and surrounding communities. Hours and availability may vary depending on weather conditions and staffing:

  • Brush Valley Fire Hall

  • Iselin / West Lebanon Fire Department

  • Mahaffey Fire Department

  • Coal Run / McIntyre VFD (Station 290)

  • Elderton District Volunteer Fire Company

  • Marion Center Fire Department

  • Pine Township VFC (Heilwood)

  • Hope Fire Company of Northern Cambria

  • Saltsburg VFD River Hall (charging stations available)


Residents are encouraged to contact individual locations directly when possible to confirm hours of operation.


Additional Safe Indoor Options During Extreme Conditions


During severe cold events, some facilities may serve as informal warming spaces when emergency shelter options are limited:

  • IRMC Emergency Room is often available as a warming location during extreme cold emergencies.

  • Sheetz locations throughout the county have informally supported individuals during recent ice storms when emergency housing was unavailable.


While these locations are not designated warming centers, they may provide short-term relief during dangerous conditions.
