About

The Parks Department is responsible for managing the parks, green spaces and Borough-owned spaces within Indiana Borough. Here's a closer look:

Parks & Public Properties

The Parks Department handles all mowing and landscaping of Borough-maintained spaces. The Department is responsible for maintaining our public parks, including monthly maintenance inspections of playgrounds. Parks also assists with snow removal on public properties.

Shade Tree Commission

The Parks Department Supervisor serves as the Borough Representative for Shade Tree Commission. In this capacity, the Parks Department informs STC of any tree-related issues in the Borough and can provide the recommendations of, and support to, the Borough Arborist.

Trees

Indiana is designated as Tree City and is commonly referred to as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World"! It should go without saying that trees are important to us. The Parks Department handles all tree permits (planting, pruning, and utility concerns). The department plants, prunes, and removes at-risk trees. They work closely with the Borough Arborist to determine tree health and needs.

Opportunities for residents / businesses

Are you interested in planting on your property or at your business? Check here for grants and programs available to residents, businesses, or non-profits to aid in planting trees or native plants.

future planning

As recommended in our updated comprehensive plan, INDIANA2030: Tomorrow Together, increasing and enhancing our park, green and open space will be a top priority in future planning. INDIANA2030 outlines some potential catalytic projects that would increase the availability of these spaces to our residents.

As we begin planning our Comprehensive Recreation, Park and Open Space Plan (CRPOS), we  invite your feedback on future initiatives. Check out the survey to provide feedback on the future of Community Gardens within Indiana Borough! This opportunity would be made possible through a partnership with The Indiana Community Garden and the Indiana County Conservation District.

Parks in progress

In 2024, Indiana Borough received funding from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP) for two park-related projects: McGregor Park (Frist Ward Park) and Vinegar Hill at IRMC Park. Funding for McGregor Park was partial, and we have applied for additional funds from the DCNR C2P2 program to complete the project.

Indiana Borough is also seeking volunteers to assist with updating our Borough-wide tree inventory. If you're interested, or know someone who would be, kindly fill out this form!
