Mayor George E. Hood, a fourth generation resident of Indiana, took the oath of office as Mayor January 2, 1998.  He spent his adult life working with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation from which he retired after 40 years of service.

According to the Borough Code, the Mayor has full charge and control of the Chief of Police and the police force, and he directs the time during which, the place where, and the manner in which, the Chief of Police and the police force shall perform their duties, except that council shall fix and determine the total weekly hours of employment that shall apply to the police officers.

The Mayor's control over the police department is shared to some extent with the Public Safety Committee and council.##In April 2000, the Police Department secured the first ever grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, to place a police officer in the Indiana Junior High School as a resource officer.  This program has been well received by the school administration, faculty and most important, the students.

In addition, the police officers were instrumental in writing the first ever police department mission statement and an office of the month award was initiated early on during Mayor Hood's tenure in office.  A new look was given to the police patrol cars with a redesigned logo in red and black, the colors of the Indiana High School.
